No hidden values this time, which keeps things straightforward, but you’ll need to track multiple connections per clue. Let’s work through it step by step.
Step 1: Lock in the Gorilla’s age and the rightmost ape’s personality and food
Clue 1 says the ape that hunts near the river (who turns out to be the Fish eater) is to the right of the Gorilla. Since Ape B is the Gorilla, the Fish eater must be somewhere to its right – that is, Ape C, D, or E. Clue 2 tells us the rightmost ape (Ape E) is Friendly and likes Egg. So Ape E’s Personality is Friendly and his Favorite Food is Egg. Right away we know two cells for Ape E. Clue 3 says the Gorilla is either the youngest or oldest. Then Clue 6 says the Outcast is twice the age of another ape. If you haven’t placed ages yet, you might wonder which age pair works. The only double in the final set is 12 and 6 (Ape D and Ape B). But you need Clue 8 to confirm Ape B is 6. So it’s a clue that only makes full sense later.
Clue 12: “No Beta ape is beside the Insect eater”
This one can trip you up because the Insect eater (Ape A) is itself a Beta. The clue only forbids the neighbor from being Beta, not the subject itself. Some players might mistakenly think Ape A cannot be Beta, but the clue is about adjacency.
